I am because
you are.
The Patrick & Johanna Foundation was born from a simple belief: the people, support and opportunities surrounding us can profoundly shape the direction of our lives.
This Foundation carries forward the legacy of two people whose lives taught me what it means to create space for others.
Building Pathways. Changing Lives.
Before there was a Foundation, there was an open door.
The home we grew up in was a place where people could come when they needed something. Children who needed somewhere to belong were welcomed. If someone needed food, there was a meal. If someone needed support, they were not expected to face life alone.
There was no programme name for it. No campaign. It was simply how our family understood community.
Some people create safety simply by being there.
Johanna was my grandmother.
She was not a qualified counsellor, but people in Venda knew they could come to her when life became difficult. She listened, counselled and helped people find their way through moments of crisis.
She was a natural nurturer. Her strength was not loud. It was in the way people trusted her, the way she made space for them and the way she cared.
“I am, in so many ways, because of her.”
Sometimes a pathway begins because someone creates a way in.
Patrick was my uncle and a pillar within his family.
When members of his family were without work, he used what he had: his business, his knowledge and his opportunity. He created a way for them to start operating and selling so they could begin earning for themselves.
Growing up, I saw his strength. It was only when I became an adult that I began to understand something else: being the strong one carries a weight of its own. Responsibility can leave scars that the people depending on you never see.
His life taught me that opportunity does not always arrive as a grand intervention. Sometimes someone simply opens a door and gives you a place to start.
Support can change the direction of a life.
A Place to Belong
Sometimes the first pathway is knowing you are not alone.
Someone to Turn To
Guidance and support can change how someone moves through a difficult moment.
A Way In
Opportunity becomes meaningful when someone creates a place for you to begin.
I am because
you are.
Ubuntu reminds us that our lives are connected. Who we become is shaped by the people who make room for us, teach us, challenge us, support us and create opportunities for us.
For the Foundation, this is not an abstract philosophy. It is lived experience.
What began in one family now has a wider purpose.
Patrick and Johanna passed away before I had the opportunity to build a career and give back to them in the way I once imagined I would.
Naming the Foundation after them is one way of carrying their contribution forward.
Their names now sit behind a larger commitment: to create for others some of what they created for the people around them: support, belonging, capability and a pathway towards something better.
Their legacy is not something we want simply to remember. It is something we want to continue.

We believe potential exists everywhere.
We believe opportunity does not.
We believe support can change what someone believes is possible.
We believe technology should expand opportunity, not deepen exclusion.
We believe young people deserve pathways, not promises.
We believe communities should participate in shaping their own futures.
We believe what we build should outlive us.
Carrying the legacy forward.
The Foundation was established to turn the values experienced through family and community into structured pathways that can reach further. It is a stewardship of a legacy and a responsibility for the future.
Stewardship · Legacy · Responsibility
Legacy needs structure if it is going to last.
We are building with proper institutional foundations to ensure transparency, accountability and long-term sustainability.

A legacy should create a future.
The Foundation is building towards a future where more young people have access to the support, skills, technology, confidence, relationships and opportunities that can change the direction of a life.
We know we cannot build those pathways alone.
Patrick opened pathways.
Johanna made space for people.
Their names now carry both forward.
